Movers from the Twin Cities to Chicago

The roughly 400-mile haul from St. Paul down to Chicago rides I-94 east through Wisconsin, and it is one of the steadiest long-distance lanes the Fisher family drives out of the Twin Cities. Plenty of our customers make this move for a new job downtown, a campus posting, or to land closer to family in the Chicago suburbs, and our own crew loads it in St. Paul and unloads it in Illinois on one written flat rate. No handoff to a broker, no second outfit picking up your boxes halfway.

Route Overview

Two practical ways connect the cities:

Route Distance Drive Time (loaded truck) Tolls Notes
I-94 E the whole way 400 miles 6.5 – 7.5 hours Illinois Tollway near the metro Most direct; through Eau Claire, Tomah, Madison area, into Chicago
I-94 E to I-90 through Rockford 405 miles 6.75 – 7.75 hours Illinois Tollway (I-PASS) Skips some inner-metro stacking; a few extra toll miles
Toll note: Wisconsin’s stretch of I-94 is toll-free; the tolls land near the Chicago metro on the Illinois Tollway. Any I-PASS charge on our truck is covered and itemized on your written estimate, never a surprise at the unload.

Chicago Destination Specifics

Chicago spreads across Cook County and into the collar suburbs, and access changes a lot by part of town. Move-day logistics there run differently than what you know from a Twin Cities driveway:

  • The Loop & River North: High-rise towers with strict freight-elevator reservations, certificate-of-insurance paperwork on file before move day, and timed loading-dock windows. We sort the COI ahead so the building lets us in.
  • Lincoln Park, Lakeview & Wicker Park: Older walk-ups and graystones with narrow stairs and street-only parking; we plan crew size and padding for the climb, much like a St. Paul century home.
  • Logan Square & Pilsen: Two-flats and converted lofts on tight lots, often with a permit needed to hold curb space for a 26-foot truck.
  • Naperville, Schaumburg & the collar suburbs: Master-planned HOA homes with driveways and easy approaches, the simplest unloads on this lane.

Timing and Cost Factors

The Twin Cities-to-Chicago lane has three demand peaks:

  1. May through August — the summer peak, when most families relocate and the calendar books up fastest
  2. Winter weather, December through March — lake-effect snow near Chicago and a Wisconsin blizzard can each push a date, so we watch the forecast and build in a buffer
  3. Month-end and first-of-month — lease turnovers and closings stack around the 1st and 31st, so booking early locks your date

What to expect

How your St. Paul, MN → Chicago, IL move runs

Send your St. Paul or Minneapolis origin address, your Chicago-area destination ZIP, and a rough inventory or home size through the quote form so we can size the crew and truck.

We review the details and get a written flat-rate interstate estimate back to you, usually within 2 to 4 business hours, with no hourly meter.

We confirm access at both ends — Loop high-rise COI paperwork, freight-elevator windows, neighborhood street permits, or collar-suburb HOA gate codes — and lock the rate after a quick video or in-home survey.

On move day our own crew loads at your Twin Cities home and drives I-94 east about 400 miles, roughly six and a half hours through Eau Claire and the Madison area into Chicago.

We unload, place, and reassemble at your Chicago address; you check every item against the inventory, sign the bill of lading, and settle at the flat rate we quoted.

I had a great moving experience with them. The quote they gave was pretty accurate, the only thing we paid on top of the quote was the fee the distance to our door being over 75 feet. For the most part, great experience. They are transparent, helpful, and responsive. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because we were supposed to get a call to confirm the date of drop off in advance. We didn't get that call until a few minutes before they came. We ended up being home so it wasn't a problem, but they would have had to redeliver if we weren't home. Other than that, great experience.

Such an easy process start to finish. The crew worked so efficiently and quickly. On top of that they were all polite and respectful. The crew worked hard and finished a little earlier than expected so they issued us a refund for the unused time. I will not hesitate to use them again in the future!
